Russian authorities have commenced binding their clampdowns on Binance, the largest crypto exchange in the world. Russian telecom regulator, The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media, often regarded as Roskomnadzor, has added the Binance cryptocurrency exchange on the prohibited list websites. Nevertheless, Binance officials ensure that the funds on the platform are safe. Reportedly, Russia’s Regulator blacklisted Binance because of disseminating data related to the purchase of cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin (BTC).
Binance Officials Claims that the Russian Regulator did not inform them in prior.
The Russian registry of blacklisted websites unveils that Binance.com was added to the list already on June 2, 2020. Nonetheless, Binance officials state that they have only been notified about blacklisting by the Russian telecom regulator on September 24. Binance claims that they were not aware of any claims by law enforcement agencies, civil government services, or courts before receiving the above notification. Further, they state that they asked legal counsels for advice.
According to Gleb Kostarev, Binance’s head of operations for Russia, the exchange quickly notified their customers about that matter through an official announcement via the exchange’s Russian Telegram channel. It convinced its users that their funds are safe. Notwithstanding it has been blacklisted for more than three months now, the platform is still accessible in Russia, without any workarounds, such as using a VPN.
However, this can transform at any given moment, as the Roskomnadzor further cracks down on cryptocurrency-related websites and platforms. In August, for instance, the telecom regulator blocked BestChange.ru, a popular cryptocurrency services aggregator. BestChange.ru featured trading pairs from approximately 400 different local exchanges. The Russia authorities have lately adopted stringent policies to curb cryptocurrency-related activities in the country.
