Mastercard and Visa Pornhub latest news

The duo of payment giants Mastercard and Visa have pulled the plug on the world’s largest porn website Pornhub over allegations of child sex abuse.

The announcement came as Mastercard came to the assessment that, indeed, the allegations of child sex porn against Pornhub is not far from the truth. It released a statement on Bloomberg shutting out Pornhub from its services.

“Our investigation over the past several days has confirmed violations of our standards prohibiting unlawful content on their site. We instructed the financial institutions that connect the site to our network to terminate acceptance.”

Mastercard’s competitor Visa followed suit announcing it is suspending its services from Pornhub pending in a tweet

Given the allegations of illegal activity, Visa is suspending Pornhub’s acceptance privileges pending the completion of our ongoing investigation. We are instructing the financial institutions who serve MindGeek to suspend the processing of payments through the Visa network.

Pornhub slams Mastercard and Visa for their actions, calling it “disappointing.”

On the other hand, Pornhub says the actions from the payment processors are “disappointing.” It argues that it had already implemented safeguards against unscrupulous video downloads and permitted only certain partner accounts to upload content. The adult content website further put up a defense that

“This news is crushing for the hundreds of thousands of models who rely on our platform for their livelihoods.”

The New York Times wrote a piece accusing the porn content promoter of allowing video recordings of assaults on unconscious women and girls. Pornhub had refuted the claims denying them in the strongest terms. However, the Internet Watch Foundation reported 118 incidents on Pornhub over the last three years. This and several other pieces of evidence led to petitions against Pornhub, many asking for it to be shutdown. One of such that gained massive traction attracting over 2 million signatures was Laila Mickelwait’s petition.

Many of Pornhub’s customers who are already complaining of harsh times during the pandemic call out Mastercard and Visa for their actions.

However, another community may see this as an opportunity for adoption, and that’s the cryptocurrency community. Pornhub already accepts Bitcoin, Litecoin, and privacy coin Verge as a means of payment on its platform. Moreover, disenfranchised Pornhub customers can always opt for the crypto form of payment as they are more immune to censorship.
