U.S. prosecutors state cybersecurity pioneer John McAfee was arrested on tax-evasion charges. He did not file tax returns for four years. His wife Janice McAfee issued a statement on their Twitter accounts on Tuesday morning. She affirms that he is under detainment in Spain. She further states that he was in “good spirits” and thanking his followers for their support. John McAfee is the founder of the computer security company McAfee.
John McAfee neglected to file tax returns.
According to the Justice Department, McAfee neglected to file tax returns from 2014-2018, thus hiding assets that involve real estate, a vehicle, and a yacht in the name of others. He was anticipating extradition in Spain. This is also not the first arrest that McAfee faced in 2020. In August, he got famous for detention somewhere in Europe for declining to wear a medically-certified mask via the conditions of Covid-19. He put ladies’ underwear on his face instead.
For the uninitiated, prosecutors claim that McAfee received millions of dollars by promoting cryptocurrencies, speaking engagements, consulting jobs, and marketing the rights to his life story for a documentary. However, he never filed tax returns.
John McAfee violated several SEC laws.
Additionally, the charges were pressed just hours after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sued McAfee for supporting the sale of crypto ICOs without revealing the compensation received for doing so. On Monday, the commission sued McAfee. It claims that he recommended seven initial coin offerings to his Twitter followers without revealing that he received more than $23 million to boost them from November 2017 to February 2018.
US SEC appends that his activities included the sale of securities and his recommendations were fraudulent and misleading for various reasons. Moreover, McAfee has his involvement in scalping. He holds large amounts of cryptocurrency without revealing his intent to sell it.
Earlier this year, McAfee also declared his plans to compete for the 2020 U.S. Presidential Elections. Moreover, he promoted himself, stating he would be the perfect candidate to transform the system.
